The Importance of DARE

Due to the tragic events recently at Sandy Hook, many experts are advocating to have police officers in the schools. I agree with this idea. Until recently, police officers were already there through the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. However, due to budget cuts and other misconceptions, those programs were discontinued. If communities want officers back in their schools, they should bring back DARE and other programs just like it.

Cannabis Use Linked to More Severe Schizophrenia

Abstract:
NICE, France — Cannabis use not only increases the risk for schizophrenia but new research suggests it is associated with more severe schizophrenic psychosis.
A large, longitudinal cohort study shows that schizophrenia patients with a history of cannabis use had longer hospital stays, a higher rate of hospital readmission, and a type of schizophrenia "that may be more severe than schizophrenia cases in general," according to study investigator Peter Allebeck, MD, PhD, professor of social medicine in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

La PORTE — La Porte Community Schools is officially bringing back its Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program next year, thanks to help from the police department and Bethany Lutheran Church.
