Methodology: 1989 survey conducted in Long Beach, California, with 1,884 students from 21 D.A.R.E. schools and 1,192 students from 16 non-D.A.R.E. schools.

Findings: There was a major decrease in D.A.R.E. students' initial use of alcohol. D.A.R.E.'s greatest benefit was providing information on the effects and consequences of drug use and on increasing student confidence to resist pressure to use drugs.
